This month, rolling closures along the main thoroughfare, from Alinga Street to the Barton Highway, have brought much of the city to a crawl. And traffic delays are set to get even worse over the weekend.

Between Friday and Monday, four key intersections will close for 54 hours and, on one occasion, up to 66 hours to allow for the installation of the rail track's concrete slab.

Intersections affected include Barry Drive/Cooyong Street and Mouat Street/Antill Street.

It marks the beginning of major construction works that will run until April of next year as the ACT government forges ahead with plans to bring the rail network online by late 2018.

Several intersections will remain closed for up to a month as a result, including the Condamine Street and Ipima Street intersection which closed on Monday for the fortnight until December 4.

A spokeswoman for Transport Canberra and City Services said the agency was working hard to ensure this month's road closures caused as little disruption as possible.

Canberra Metro does not plan to carry out any large works during the Christmas holiday period.

Public Transport Association of Canberra chair Damien Haas said completing the rail network on schedule would be a great achievement for the territory.

"Any construction project creates disruption, but light rail has hit all its milestones on time," he said.

"The minor inconvenience car drivers experience will be over soon, and they might even think of using the light rail they have been watching being built."

While general light rail works will continue during weekday hours at most sites, construction is only slated for weekends or at night at key intersections along Northbourne Avenue.

Residents and local businesses will be notified before the start of any work in their area. Track laying is also continuing along Flemington Road.

Earlier this year, Northbourne Avenue lost its iconic trees when light rail construction began. New trees will be planted along the corridor once they grow to between four and five metres.
