Democracy is great value for money – we shouldn’t short change it

The price of civilisation is rising and it’s not at all clear that our elected representatives want to keep paying for it. Of even greater concern is that those same legislators who oversee finance watchdogs with no teeth, a statistics bureau that can’t run a census and a welfare agency that can’t answer the phone, like calling themselves ‘conservatives’.
