Growing up, he wanted to be a doctor, and it was one of the highly-skilled immigrant professions being sought after by the Australian government along with teachers, engineers, and pharmacists.

Ultimately, though, it came down to what his parents wanted, and tradition was the deciding factor.

"I had the marks to be a doctor but my father said, 'No, you go to the pharmacy. Your sister will go and be a doctor.' More or less it was a family decision, not my decision," Mr Morcos, now 77, said.

"In my father's opinion, because he was a general manager of a company, [being] a pharmacist is a trade for men. Being a doctor is good for women. They are equally as good but he said, 'a pharmacy is a business. You will run a business.'"

At the time, Mr Morcos says that Christians also "weren't welcome" in the Muslim-majority country.

This saw many families push their children into "top" professions in which they could thrive overseas, or remain mostly independent of the then-volatile Egyptian government.

"They said, 'Ok, be a doctor or be a pharmacist', [then] you are individual and you don't need the government or don't really need a job because you have your own," Mr Morcos said.

"Your family would help. You'd make a pharmacy for yourself or have your own surgery. That was preferred."

Shortly after graduating, Mr Morcos did just that, opening his own pharmacy in Egypt before emigrating to Australia about four years later.

It's here that he began work at Granville Family Pharmacy and, about 45 years later, he - along will his pharmacist son - still serves the Granville community doing the job that he's come to love.

Many Egyptian men and women followed in his stead and, today, according to the latest Australian Taxation Office data, Egyptians make up three per cent of all pharmacists in Australia, or about 741 out of a total 23,372.

If ever you meet someone living in Australia who says they were born in Egypt, there’s about a one in 50 chance that they work as a pharmacist, a far higher chance than the general population.

He says a lot of people from his home country came to Australia to seek a better life, away from the volatility of the Egyptian government, and now he feels at home here.

"Most of our universities had connections with English universities so we have been welcomed here because we have the knowledge. And almost all of us used to speak good English," he said.

"I love this country."

Other jobs that employ a high percentage of people from particular countries include beauty therapists (20 per cent are from Vietnam), structural steel construction workers (17 per cent are from New Zealand), wall and floor tilers (11 per cent are from Afghanistan), and gallery, museum and tour guides (10 per cent are from China).

The data shows that Australia is the most common country of birth for every occupation. About 68 per cent of those employed as of the 2016 census were born in Australia, but for some professions the proportion of Australian-born people was significantly higher.

Some 91.5 per cent of livestock farmers, 87.8 per cent of school principals, 87.5 per cent of shearers, 87.2 per cent of plumbers, 86.3 per cent of members of parliament and 84.5 per cent of police officers were born here.

Automobile drivers (such a taxi drivers and chauffeurs) were least likely to have been born in Australia, at 27.3 per cent. Their most common country of birth after Australia was India (25.6 per cent), followed by Pakistan (6.8 per cent), China (4.8 per cent), Bangladesh (4.7 per cent) and Lebanon (2.6 per cent).

And less than half of the country’s chefs, housekeepers, sewing machinists, dentists, psychiatrists, general practitioners, software programmers and electronics engineers were born in Australia.
