A 16-year-old boy has died after an accident at Mount Ainslie on Thursday while on the mountain with a school group.

Students at Campbell High School were at the mountain for physical education class. It is believed the accident involved a heavy log.

Han Nguyen reports a year 10 student was taken to Canberra Hospital after the incident just before noon, but later died.

Doug Dingwall reports the Department of Home Affairs wants its junior and middle-ranking bureaucrats protected from having their names revealed in documents released to the public under freedom of information laws.

Changes to rules for government agencies releasing their documents should make it easier to withhold the names of lower-ranking public servants and contractors, the agency told a Senate committee in a submission.

Glenn Tibbitts has seen it all. In his teenage years, Mr Tibbitts was sleeping rough on city streets across the country and at 50, he was acting bodyguard for former-United Nations secretary general Kofi Annan.

"It's a huge step isn't it? I look at that quite often and think I'm proud of that," Mr Tibbitts said.

Now the face of ACT Council of Social Service and Red Cross ACT's Anti-Poverty Week, Mr Tibbitts helps Canberra's ex-prisoners transition back into everyday life.
