After a chilly morning we're heading for a partly cloudy top of 17 today, it's definitely starting to feel like we have shaken winter off.

The University of Canberra is celebrating its 50th birthday and that means it's time for stories of the good old days - especially pranks that wouldn't make it past first base these days.

In 1976 some students convinced a travelling circus to loan them an elephant, in order to win a university scavenger hunt. One year, the Russian ambassador's car was dragged in as part of the hunt.

This story, and others, are all part of the birthday celebrations.

Just hours after the shock resignation of ACT Brumbies chief executive Michael Thomson, the club had already announced his replacement.

And it's not an unfamiliar figure, but from an unusual place. Chairman Phil Thomson will resign from the board and take on the chief executive role, in a bid to give the club stability after it's had six changes in the top job since 2013.

Chris Dutton has the details of the unusual board meeting when the decision was made here.

A court has heard champion endurance cyclist Mike Hall was wearing dark clothing and was "difficult to see" right before he was hit by a car.

The 35-year-old British cyclist died on March 31 last year after a collision at the intersection of the Monaro Highway and Williamsdale Road, while he was competing in the Indian Pacific Wheel Race.

No charges have been laid against the driver but the coroner is investigating the circumstances surrounding the death.

People in the ACT's proposed anti-corruption commission cross-hairs could delay or kill off potential public hearings of the investigations by appealing the decision to hold the hearings to the courts, the territory's ethics adviser has warned.

The warning, from the Legislative Assembly's ethics and integrity adviser Stephen Skehill, comes as the select committee examines two different versions of a bill to establish the new commission, from the government and opposition.

Fashfest is back in 2018 and with three runway shows set to be staged across the next five months, there's going to be so much fashion my wardrobe is going to be looking very drab indeed.

It's the sixth year of the fashion show, and the first event will be at the National Gallery in October, with three local designers approached to show their wares.

Maison de Chaillie Couture, Megan Canning Designs and Carly Thorn - an 18-year-old from Cooma, will be featured.
