The ACT government will review land under concessional leases in Canberra to determine whether it's being used efficiently, as part of its bid for more urban infill across the city.

The review forms part of the new planning strategy, designed to deal with an ACT population predicted to hit 589,000 by 2041.

Canberra will need 12 homes a day to meet this demand, with 70 per cent of new homes to be sourced from infill in existing suburbs, according to the strategy.

Last week, our reporter Sally Whyte revealed the next steps in the Department of Home Affairs' years-long process to privatise Australia's visa processing system.

But Labor has announced it will "strongly oppose" any plans to privatise the process.

Labor's immigration spokesman, Shayne Neumann, said on Sunday the party was deeply concerned about letting a private company process visas.

He said selling off the task currently done by government employees would mean the loss of thousands of Australian jobs and put at risk the privacy of applicants.
