The government has again overhauled its proposed bus network changes, adding an extra 78 services to schools and expanding rapid buses - but about 50 schools will still lose their dedicated services.

The final bus network was unveiled today, the latest change following prolonged public backlash after most of the city's dedicated school bus services were scrapped in previous versions of the network map. These dedicated services have been upped from 144 to 222 each day.

The government has made 37 changes across 50 routes following feedback from the latest consultation period.

Canberra prison is bursting at the seams, as a spike in male inmates stretches the jail's population to record levels.

A total of 507 prisoners were locked up at Alexander Maconochie Centre on June 19 and 25 this year, four inmates shy of capacity.

Dan Jervis-Bardy reports the jail had an average daily population of 474 detainees during 2017-18, up from 445 in 2016-17 and almost double the number from eight years ago.

Worksafe ACT has taken action against the territory government after a two-year investigation into violence in public schools found it had failed in its duty of care to staff.

Among the incidents investigated by the watchdog was the case of a pregnant staff member punched repeatedly in the stomach by a young student, a teacher hospitalised by a student's kick and a computer monitor thrown at a teacher's head.

At another school, a support worker who reported multiple injuries from students was left in harms' way for months as strategies put in place failed to protect them.

Of the more than 1 million bulbs that went into the ground for Floriade this year, perhaps 100 bucketloads will live a little longer, after they were sent to brighten up nursing homes and hospitals on Monday.

With the help of volunteers and staff, head Floriade gardener Andrew Forster cut flowers and dug up bulbs to distribute among the community. He said about 100 bucketloads of Dutch iris, and mixed tulips were loaded on to the back of utes and taken to hospitals for patients and nursing homes, including Kangara Waters in Belconnen and George Forbes in Queanbeyan.

More Canberrans are waiting longer than clinically recommended for surgery and to be seen in the emergency department, new figures show.

Figures in the 2017-18 ACT Health annual report show a sharp drop in key emergency department and elective surgery wait times.

The annual report puts the blame on the blow out on a bad flu season and an increase in demand for surgery.
