For actor Joe Petruzzi, an Italian-Australian born in the 1950s, it still shocks and delights him that "a 30-something year old Indian woman" could approach him after a performance, telling him how accurately he portrayed her story.

This seems to be the universality of Jurassica, the multi-generational, migrant play coming to the Q.

Jurassica tells the tale of Italian couple Ralph and Sara, who during the 1950s trade in the rolling green hills of Tuscany for the concreted front yards of Moorabin, Victoria.

If you're Italian and you know it, the production has been described as being as patiently put together as “Nonna’s perfect slow-cooked pork”.

However, Petruzzi, who plays Ralph, believes locals of all ethnicities will get a lot out of seeing the show, particularly in a town with as rich a migrant past as Queanbeyan.

"Regardless of one's ethnic background, anyone who has links to migration will get a perspective on migration from Jurassica.

"The play examines all those issues to do with displacement. It touches on nostalgia, that feeling of longing and also how you have to change your life when you move across the world. Not to mention how it affects your family.

"All of us in some way can connect to this, particularly me."

Like his character in the play, Petruzzi's father migrated from Tuscany to Australia in 1952.

He took up three years of work on the Snowy Mountains Scheme, at one point staying in Queanbeyan.

While some parts of the play are spoken in Italian, Petruzzi - who is fluent - assures me it won't be hard for non-Italian speaking audiences to keep up thanks to its "clever set-up".

The text, penned by another child of migrant parents Dan Giovannoni, is now even in the Victorian school syllabus.

Jurassica is still touring around and "finding relevance" around Australia after first being staged in 2015. So far, it's been performed around regional Victoria, Sydney and will soon be performed in another town with a large Italian presence, Griffith.

Jurassica explores one family and how the migration affects three generations. Something Petruzzi deeply relates to, as well as the rest of the cast.

Many of the cast hail from migrant communities in Melbourne, like Brunswick and the northern suburbs.

"We as a cast have enjoyed this shared connection. But it always shocks me when we perform in communities and the adversity of people who come up afterwards and say: "That's my story!"

"It shocks me that there is this commonality."
