A freedom of information request found more than 300 infringements for 'stop in bicycle lane' were issued on Sundays alone over nine weeks.

Philippa Horner has been going to the markets every Sunday since it first moved to Phillip in October 2016.

Ms Horner normally gets to the markets about 7.30am and parks inside the grounds. But on July 1st when her niece was visiting from interstate, Ms Horner arranged for them to meet with her sister at the markets at a later time.

"I went later than I normally do, it was about 9am which means there are a lot more people there than there usually are," Ms Horner said.

"Instead of parking inside, which I always do, we parked outside on the street, because we couldn't get a park and we met my sister who also had parked out on the street."

About two weeks later Ms Horner received a message from her niece asking her to check if there were any 'no parking' signs on Launceston Street. She revived an infringement notice for a 'stop in a bicycle lane' at 9.40am.

"I drove down there and had a look and there were no parking signs, nothing, but I could see a white line and from the notice I worked out it indicated a bicycle lane," she said.

"I said to my niece, the reason you didn't see any 'no parking' signs was because there weren't any and the white bicycle lines would have been covered by all the cars parked along the street."

Ms Horner said her sister also received a fine of $214 for parking on the north side of Launceston Street at 10.40am.

"While I appreciate that we are all expected to know all the road rules, cars have been parking along that street on Sunday mornings for as long as the market has been open."

She found a number of people had made complaints about receiving infringements which started in May.

Ms Horner lodged a freedom of information request for the number of notices issued for the offence of 'stop in bicycle lane' occurring on each Sunday from and including May 27 to Sunday July 22.

It found 317 notices were issued during that time, averaging about 35 fines per day and an estimated $68,000 in revenue.

Southside Farmers Market manager Wayne Skein said there were no visible signs, bicycle lane, no parking or no stopping signs for within 100-200 metres of the area.

"Even though there are some old road markings, they are very faint and also impossible to see if other cars are already parked on top of them," Mr Skein said.

"We don't think it is obvious that people shouldn't park there and by the amount of people who have parked there and continue to do so, we would assume it's not obvious to them either."

Access Canberra said there was existing signage indicating a bicycle lane as well as no parking signs on Launceston Street but said it was working with Transport Canberra and City Services to determine whether there was an opportunity to include additional signage in the area.

"However, Access Canberra inspectors have noted that the organisers of the farmers market have introduced their own signage encouraging motorists to comply by not parking in the bicycle lane," a spokeswoman said.

"In addition, Access Canberra has investigated whether there are other parking options available for citizen’s attending the farmers market."

In response to the matter, market organisers have been running an awareness campaign on social media.

"As we only lease the grounds, we are unable to put up any permanent warning fixtures, but we have been putting out temporary signage on Sundays for the past month or so along Launceston Street," Mr Skein said.

A petition has been created asking the government to install appropriate signage to the area and increase and improve faded road markings immediately.

"We would also ask that the Road Transport Authority considers leniency for registered disputes over any such infringements issued at the location from 27 May onwards, until the issue of inadequate signage has been addressed," Mr Skien said.
