Engineers had closed one of the westbound lanes to inspect the damage to the bridge after the truck carrying an excavator failed to pass under it.
No one was reported injured in the incident, which happened about 10am.
The National Capital Authority, which oversees the land the bridge is on, said engineers had reported no structural damage to the bridge and had reopened the closed lane at about 4pm.
Engineers worked throughout the afternoon to ensure the bridge was safe to pass under due to the risk of loose rubble falling onto cars below.
Emergency services had advised Canberrans to avoid going westbound on Parkes Way with traffic at one point being congested back to the Corranderk Street roundabout.
The authority said a temporary plate was covering the damage but repairs would have to planned in the near future.
