Sadly, a decade on, the anti-detention centre anthem My People is as potent and relevant as ever.

On the bright side, the frenetic and furious banger can unify a dance floor like few others. Not even the Presets, arguably the country's greatest exponents of EDM, have anything that resonates more.

They gave it a go, with a 90-minute set of hedonistic electro beats that paused for breath only to ratchet up the excitement. Launching into Talk Like That at the outset established the mood, and the sharp edges of Eucalyptus, also from 2008's Apocalypso, dispelled any notion Julian Hamilton and Kim Moyes had gone soft.

Hi Viz, the first LP in six years, provided the spine of the set, with several tracks already counting among fan favourites and others that take a little effort to warm to. Martini goes down well enough, but the accompanying visuals that were akin to Peter Gabriel's Sledgehammer by way of the Reject Shop will likely linger longer. Do What You Want seems to try too hard to channel Apocalypso, while Tools Down starts promisingly before petering out.

They're not really bad, but they're overshadowed by the dazzling Downtown Shutdown, a protest party full of life, colour and a choir of refugees with a disco groove that just won't quit. It was this, even over established hits, echoing along the street on the way home.

No one comes to a Presets gig for vocal gymnastics from Hamilton – his gift is in bringing a crowd to its feet and stirring emotion by speaking for all of us.

Those qualities were best used on This Boy's In Love, which has evolved over the years into a monster, and I Go Hard, I Go Home from the debut Beams. Guest vocals did heavy lifting on several tracks, and the DMA's collaboration Are You There? was among the most blissful, euphoric moments.

Bolder, brighter and happier the new songs may be, the Presets are still the go-to band for the rave at the end of the world.
