Em Rusciano to depart 2DayFM breakfast

Radio host Em Rusciano is hanging up the headphones after two years on the struggling 2DayFM breakfast show.

Rusciano, who hosts the show alongside Grant Denyer and Ed Kavalee, made the announcement on air this morning.

She will wrap up full-time duties with the show this Friday, but will return from time to time when Grant Denyer is away due his TV commitments.

Rusciano said she made the decision to leave the show when she found out she was expecting a child early next year.

"This is entirely my decision and not one I made lightly. When I found out I was pregnant I made my mind up," she said. "Last time I attempted breakfast radio and pregnancy I ended up in a psych ward."

The comedian acknowledged she had initially planned to see out her contract until December but the demands of the pregnancy made her have second thoughts.

"This job requires someone who is on all the time and completely present," she said. "I am relieved I no longer have to get up at 4am, I am relieved I no longer have to come up with three hours of content."

Rusciano said her time at 2DayFM had been a "mixed bag". She has admitted being difficult to work with and in the past expressed her disappointment at having to share the microphone with new co-hosts.

The comedian has also experienced personal tragedy in the time she's been on the show. Last year, she opened up about miscarriage's "dark cloud".

2DayFM's breakfast show has struggled in the ratings since Rusciano took over in January last year. Her time with the station began with Harley Breen as her co-host, with the pair netting around 4 per cent of Sydney's radio market. By November, the show had plummeted to a 2.9 per cent share – trailing even Triple J and 2UE's Talking Lifestyle.

This year saw Breen replaced with Kavalee and Denyer. The fresh faces helped lift the show's ratings. By the middle of the year, the trio recorded a 4.9 per cent audience share.

However, last week's survey saw them fall to an audience share of 3.3 (FM rivals such as KIIS, Smooth and Nova all command a breakfast share above 7 percentage points).

Ash London, who hosts a weeknight music show across the Hit Network, will fill-in for the comedian until 2DayFM's 2019 lineup is revealed. The popular host has filled in for Rusciano in the past.

The Hit Network's head of content, Gemma Fordham, said she was "thrilled" for Rusciano and her family.

"Em had a heart-to-heart with me last month and let me know that she would like to wrap-up breakfast hours and focus on her growing family and her other many creative pursuits," she said.

"Em has always been forthright and honest with our listeners, sharing every intimate detail of her life and she will continue to be part of the 2DayFM family when she can for the remainder of this year."
