Welcome to The Water Games, a 22-minute action film "made for radio'', right here in the national capital.

It's the work of Ned Breward and Josh Torney, the presenters of the Hit 104.7 breakfast show, Ned and Josh.

"It was just a thought myself and Josh and Matty [Heap, our producer] had - 'Wouldn't it be really funny if there was a professional-looking movie made by people who don't know how to make movies?','' Ned said, with a laugh.

"And then we got people who could make movies to help us.''

The premise for the film is someone is threatening to poison the waterways of the Canberra region - "Ginninderra, Queanbeyan River, Lake Burley Griffin, all no longer safe'' - and Ned and Josh must come to the rescue as private detectives.

Their listeners helped by choosing the genre of the film, its locations and which big stunt they should pull, which ended up being a pretty dramatic car crash, filmed in Tuggeranong with professional stuntmen.

Josh said he was grateful to listeners who put their hand up and also appeared in the movie.

"They did really well and, in fact, deliver their lines better than we did,'' he said.

The guys said the mini-film was financed with the support of local businesses and some "very, very dodgy product placements''.

"So Josh and I have Anytime Fitness equipment in our office. Anytime we eat anything, it's McDonald's. A key meeting place was Cornerstone Cafe [in Gungahlin]. The guys from Night and Day Locksmiths turn up to help us. Our car is from Gerald Slaven...."

Josh said filming had brought him and Ned closer as they endured mammoth days doing the radio show and then filming after work.

"It's been really, really good. We're best mates,'' he said.

The film's premiere is Friday at 7pm at Events Cinema in Manuka.

"I don't think anyone's going to give us an Oscar but it's more so that people can say, 'Oh, that's me and that's funny','' Ned said.

The action movie will be available to view for free on Hit 104.7 Facebook, website and YouTube from Friday evening.
