Margaret Wells (Samantha Morton) and Lydia Quigley (Lesley Manville) each aim to run the city's most popular and profitable establishment and both are prepared to fight for that distinction. In addition, Margaret wants to ensure that her daughters attain financial security by firmly hitching themselves to moneyed men.

Despite the strength, resourcefulness and sometimes the beauty of the women depicted in this wild world, all are dependent on the desires and whims of men. The precarious and potentially perilous nature of that situation is everywhere felt, even for the hotly desired stunners such as Margaret's daughters, Charlotte (Jessica Brown Findlay) and Lucy (Eloise Smyth).
