Full job description

The Role
As an Insider Threat Analyst, you will find yourself working alongside remarkable people using advanced technology, techniques and innovation to: 

  • Analyse IT security events and large data sets for the purposes of incident response and supporting investigations.
  • Generate reliable and accurate reporting of security incidents, and be able to communicate clearly the risk and impact of a security incident.
  • Maintain case management systems for the purposes of tracking insider threat security incidents and investigations.
  • Develop use cases and modelling, focusing on insider threat indicators.
  • Liaise with project teams and external stakeholders to achieve team objectives.
  • Develop documentation and training such as play books/run books and standard operating procedures (SOP). 

Selected applicants will be required to complete a successful Psychological Assessment (PA) and hold a minimum of Negative Vetting 2 clearance as part of the process. This is a condition of engagement and must be completed prior to commencement.

The successful applicant will be expected to gain and maintain a PV clearance on commencement in the role.

The Insider Threat and Investigative Support (ITIS) Directorate is a diverse, fast-paced and high performing area that provides support to Defence Investigative Authorities, and monitoring of Defence ICT networks, to identify and mitigate Insider Threats. Performing these functions on one of the largest ICT networks in Australia is both challenging and rewarding, and you will have a truly unique opportunity to work in a niche, yet growing, field alongside highly specialised and talented people.

We work with a wide variety of stakeholders to provide cyber secure capabilities in support of ADF Operations and Defence business. As an Insider Threat Analyst, you will have an opportunity to develop and utilise your skills and knowledge to achieve positive security outcomes. 


Our Ideal Candidate
As a member of the Insider Threat and Investigative Support (ITIS) Directorate, the successful applicant will be able to demonstrate: 

  • Experience working within a Security Operations Centre (SOC) role, Cyber Threat Intelligence (CTI), or other similar IT security analyst role.
  • A sound understanding of security event log analysis, detection and response techniques within Security Information and Event Management (SIEM) tools.
  • Strong understanding of security implications and risks that can lead to the compromise of data through authorised and non-authorised access.
  • Knowledge of networking protocols, system and application event logging and Incident Response processes.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills to effectively convey complex technical and non-technical information to a wide variety of stakeholders.
  • Ability to continually and quickly learn new skills and abilities, and apply learnings to their day-to-day duties.
  • Ability to work effectively and at times autonomously in a small team, manage competing priorities and deliver positive security outcomes.
