Pialligo Estate is owned by a fifth generation Australian farming family and has evolved to be a multi-faceted farming, food production and hospitality business. Tucked away within the serene landscaping and gardens is one of Canberra’s premier dining and event venues utilizing the freshest organic produce picked daily. Just a stone throw away, our Market Grocer and Smokehouse synergise with our ethos in striving for excellent produce and supporting the community of small local producers. Just 10 minutes from the Canberra CBD and yet you’ll feel a world away, taking in the tranquil views across the Molongo river and beyond to the Brindabella Mountains.

In-line with our upcoming expansion plans, Pialligo Estate is now seeking the services of a highly capable and experienced Farm Manager to oversee and lead our agriculture division. The Farm Manager role will form an integral part of the Senior Leadership Team and will ensure that continued high standards of quality control are met for fruit and vegetable production.

The successful candidate will be able to demonstrate hands-on leadership and maturity that will drive a team of operationally based professionals at site level and drive further leadership and overall production excellence. They will train, mentor and develop their team in best practice.

Reporting to the company Founder and Director.

As Farm Manager, you will be accountable for the following outcomes:

  • Constant drive for quality and excellence.
  • Ensuring execution of the farming plan, in alignment with business objectives, including production and yield management and record keeping.
  • Driving improvement in farm operations, ensuring the effective use of resources, manage and install infrastructure as required including equipment purchase, maintenance and operation.
  • Ensuring best use of resources for profitable and sustainable future for Pialligo Estate.
  • Managing and training employees to ensure best practice workplace health and safety standards.
  • Managing farm operations in line with business ethos of sustainability and environmentally friendly practice.
  • Owning and managing the delegated budget expectations.
  • Leading, coaching and developing the team to drive personal growth and successful operational outcomes.
  • Coordinating harvest.
  • Train / monitor operators where required to ensure tasks are done as per standard procedures.
  • Prepare working programmes daily / weekly / monthly to facilitate implementation of respective tasks.
  • Confidently prepare subject matter designed to lead teams through challenging food safety and quality situations.

About You:

  • Have an educational background in horticulture or agronomics.
  • Are a natural leader with management experience.
  • Have at least 7 years of experience in vegetable/seed production, preferably in the open field and in greenhouses.
  • Have scientific knowledge of agronomic inputs required for vegetable production.
  • Are a team player with excellent communication skills.
  • Display a proven record of skills and knowledge in agriculture/horticulture.
  • Have considerable experience, fundamental knowledge and skills in farm operations.
  • Are a trustworthy person who can be relied upon.
  • Possess the ability to think outside of the box; be able to engage members and have strong initiative and ability to prioritise tasks.
  • Display a can-do attitude, and have a genuine passion, energy and enthusiasm for business growth and excellence across the business.
