Design & innovation issue
In a depressing week when democracy was trashed, the plethora of thought-provoking, emotionally stimulating and inspiring articles in this issue [August 25] lifted my spirits. I hope the proposed Nine takeover of Fairfax Media does not destroy the independence of The Sydney Morning Herald, The Age and the vibrant role of the media. Siri Ranawake - Hurstville, NSW
The politicisation of Mike Cannon-Brookes
Could a caring, sharing billionaire who pays his fair share of tax in Australia really exist? I was impressed with the opinions of Atlassian co-founder Mike Cannon-Brookes [August 25], until John McDuling outed his firm as not paying company tax in Australia (did I mention billionaire already?). Sorry, mate, being tax-domiciled in the UK renders your views on our country's current challenges utterly uninteresting to me. I should have known better. Deborah Wildsmith, Dromana, Vic
Thanks to Greg Callaghan for his jargonless Michio Kaku interview [August 25]. It was the first time I've read about physics and "the future" without feeling confused. Lucinda Price - Surry Hills, NSW
Kitchen sink drama
Every Saturday morning, Anna heads outside to locate The Sydney Morning Herald, hidden within the Australian native bushland that is her front yard. Once found, she moves to the dining table where her cup of tea (Russian Caravan) sits waiting, then unwraps the paper and searches for the Good Weekend. Anna scans the headlines on the tastefully designed front cover before deliberately turning to the second-last page. There she finds what she is looking for: "Kitchen sink drama". Smiling, she inspects the sparse and delicate watercolour. Shifting her eyes to the left, Anna reads the story. She contentedly sips her tea. Anna Beniuk, Mount St Thomas, NSW
