Canberra is no Hong Kong, no New York, no Seoul. We're not a city crying out for green lungs, public parks in our built-up areas. We are, after all, surrounded by bushy plains and the rolling Brindabellas. Our capital has nature for days.

That's not to say Glebe Park, with its 160-year-old trees - and let's just say it, somewhat seedy evening reputation - doesn't have its place.
Recently, the space has been used for community events including a Christmas festival and outdoor cinema, the SpringOUT community pride picnic and even Shakespeare performances. But in the past, Glebe Park has been a mixing pot of people and interests, a fertile grounds for experimental play.
The post-apocalyptic game
Even sports fanatics might not know this one. Heck, even cinephiles probably haven't heard of The Blood of Heroes - also known as The Salute of the Jugger - the Australian-American post-apocalyptic film on which the sport is based.
Jugger is niche. While the film version of the game is technically a bloodsport, the version played in Glebe Park allows you to retain your precious life. It involves padded equipment and five players versing five other players. They meet on Sundays.
Arranged eyeballing
Remember the eye gazing trend from a few years back? The practice of sitting face-to-face with a total stranger and staring into their souls as if you were in a Marina Abramovic MoMA installation.
It's still going ahead in some pockets of Australia, but for a time in 2017, regular eye gazing sessions hosted by The Human Connection Movement were held beneath the park's English elms.
Flashes of tweed
It's the sharpest the park has ever looked. Back in June 2013, Canberra's Tweed Ride commenced under the Glebe Park rotunda.
The day saw a collective of more than 50 tweed-clad cyclists meet in their finest deerstalkers, riding boots and waistcoat pocket-watches, making the inner-city space look like the set of a period drama.
Ninja alert
My familiarity with the art of parkour goes as far as The Office opener when Jim says: "The goal is to get from point A to point B as creatively as possible. So technically they are doing parkour, as long as point A is delusion and point B is the hospital" and it ends with Andy landing in an empty fridge box by the dumpster.
Canberra parkour group Run Leap Roll, who probably operate differently to the example above, run weekly parkour and free-running sessions in Glebe. So if you're ever in the area and suddenly feel as though you've walked on the set of the latest Bond film, you haven't.
Creatures of the night
Each year, creatures of the night meet in the heart of the city for the Canberra Zombie Walk. It's ghoulish, it's gutsy, it's gory - it's Glebe Park.
Folk fusion dance
When you think of fusion dance, perhaps styles like Capoeira or Bollywood come to mind. Introducing ... ContraPop. This is a unique blend of formation folk dancing and the latest pop music that started right here in Canberra.
While the group now meets weekly in Turner, they used to dance up a storm in the charming Glebe Park gazebo, as if they were a young Liesl and Rolf.
Burpee record
Lululemon isn't just about the brunch-worthy activewear. The Canberra shop also hosts large outdoor yoga sessions on the Glebe greens.
Here's something that might turn your legs to lead, they've even hosted a challenge to set an Australian burpee record.
Salsa in a circle
Salsa Rueda group meets in Glebe Park. Whether it was during a drunken evening at Highball Express or at your aunty's second wedding, you've probably tried salsa dancing. However, Rueda is a little different.
Rueda is a Cuban group dance performed to Latin music, involving couples standing in a circle, progressing to switching partners. It's a social boogie.
