In February, the bureau announced it would axe 100 more jobs, the majority of them in Canberra, in yet another round of cuts at the agency, which had two rounds of voluntary redundancies last financial year.

A total of 6119 square-metres is available across two floors at the 45 Benjamin Way Belconnen building, one on the third level and the other on the ground floor.

Colliers International Michael Ceacis said the level three space of 5246 square metres was the largest single floor plate on the market.

"Following ABS consolidation within the building, they are handing back some of the space but remaining in the building," Mr Ceacis said.

"ABS House offers A grade office accommodation which suits a wide range of users from small to medium agencies, expansion space for large agencies, IT firms and other business services firms."

Mr Ceacis said the ground floor made up 873 square metres for office accommodation but could be used as a shopfront for a government entity or similar.

There is also limited basement car parking available.

The Canberra Times understands the Department of Home Affairs will be working out of ABS House, with the department acquiring a large part of the building.

The Home Affairs headquarters is directly opposite ABS House.

The department confirmed that staff from "several areas" would be "relocated to 45 Benjamin Way by the first half of 2019."

About 800 staff will be working out of ABS House.

The move comes following the creation of the Home Affairs super-department, which is expected to absorb hundreds of public servants from other agencies. Earlier this year it was reported the newly-created Home Affairs portfolio would employ 23,000 public servants across its security, immigration and intelligence agencies once ASIO joins its ranks.

ABS House is owned by Challenger Property Group who said the bureau and Home Affairs were currently the only tenants in the building.

"Both ABS and Home Affairs have renewed their leases as part of their broader Canberra office leasing strategy," the group said.

"Both of these leases extend until 2034 and we will undertake significant refurbishment of our buildings to meet the future needs of our tenants."

The group is also in discussion with prospective tenants for a vacant floor in the building.

The release of office floor space comes as the government pushes to reduce vacant space in its buildings.

The government reduced its floor space by nearly 70,000 square metres through its program to cut its unused real estate, called "Operation Tetris", which the Coalition says is on track to create $300 million in savings over 10 years.

Seventy per cent of the government's building leases are due to expire in the four years from July 2017, and the Coalition expects to further cut its floor space and fill remaining offices with more public servants.

The ABS House space is available in December.
