Airport reborn as old arch foe meets its end

Regulars flying in to Canberra Airport on Wednesday morning could be forgiven if they had to do a double take, and check that they really had boarded the correct flight.

After many years of being greeted with the grand arched sign confirming that yes, dear traveler, you are in Canberra, passengers and pilots will now be privy to a new, more impressive (and slightly more subtle than the blue sign of yesteryear) sight, illustrating the airport’s coming of age.

The demolition of the old Ansett/Virgin terminal reached a critical point on Tuesday night, when the old airside frontage was torn down, unveiling the airport’s grand new atrium, which glimpses of art, lights, and life within.

As the twisted steel in the photos attest, there is still more work to be done. But the airport is hopeful the demolition will be completed within months, and transformation complete by Christmas.

What do you think of the new terminal at Canberra Airport?
