Jake Miller, 27, faced the ACT Magistrates Court on Tuesday. He had handed himself in on Monday after hearing police had searched his home while he was away fishing, and was subsequently arrested.

Police allege the Holt man used a gun to hold-up the local 7-Eleven at 10pm on January 22 this year, and made off with $500 in cash.

Prosecutors opposed bail, mainly because police had not found the black pistol allegedly used in the crime even after searching the man's home on May 7. There was a concern Mr Miller could retrieve the weapon and use it to commit more crimes.

The man's defence lawyer, James Maher, said he had been told the man did not have access to the gun. Mr Maher said it had been some four months since the alleged offences, and CCTV footage had been widely distributed on social media.

"There's a real possibility this firearm may never be recovered," he said, adding that concern was not enough to keep the man in custody.

The man had support from his family, was employed full-time on a good salary, and seeking treatment for his problems, Mr Maher said.

Magistrate Karen Fryar granted bail on a cash surety of $2000.

Bail conditions also require the man to live at his Holt address, to not go within 100 metres of the 7-Eleven and also submit to the supervision of ACT Corrective Services. This included complying with any instructions about treatment for problem gambling.

She noted it was not unusual for a weapon to never be recovered. But it was unusual, the magistrate said, for a person accused of this kind of offence in these kinds of circumstances to be granted bail.

"The fact that it's taken four months to catch you ... is beside the point.

"But I accept ... there are other factors that tend to ameliorate the concerns apart from the outstanding weapon."

Mr Miller has been charged with aggravated robbery.

He did not enter pleas. The case is next due in court on May 30.

In a media statement provided outside court, ACT Policing said tip-offs from the public had led to the search warrant at the Holt home.

Detective Acting Station Sergeant Stephen Ladd thanked the Canberra community for the information they provided.

"It's cases like these that really show what can be done when the community and police work together," Mr Ladd said.

"Every piece of information could help police, no matter how small you think it is or even if you aren't sure, it may be the missing piece we need."
