The ballot of 194 blocks of land in Wright and Coombs was the first time the sales method has been used in the suburbs since 2013.

It's estimated more than 1000 people applied to be part of the ballot process, which opened in March.

The blocks of land range from 403 square metres to 977 square metres, with 123 blocks in Wright and 71 offered in Coombs.

Suburban Land Agency sales and marketing marketing Chantelle Lusti said the ballot draws were expected to continue over Sunday and Monday for those who have registered.

"There's been a high level of interest so far this weekend," she said.

"As part of the process, a machine randomly selects [one of the applicants], and then people are called up and have five minutes to choose their block."

The latest release of the 194 blocks is one of the last opportunities for homebuyers to buy land in Coombs and Wright, one of Canberra's newest suburbs in Weston Creek.

"This allocation is the northern part of Wright and we're just doing construction there at the moment," Ms Lusti said.

"All the land has been sold in the older parts of the suburb."

Among the first buyers of land in the area were Ranjit Kotagiri and Radhika Irukulla, with the couple and their two children set to build on a block in Coombs.

Currently living in a townhouse in Coombs, Mr Kotagiri said he had been searching for a larger property for their growing family.

"We were thinking of upgrading for a while, we've been thinking about that since last year," he said.

"I was mainly looking around south Canberra, but I heard about the ballot through some friends."

As one of the first people selected as part of the ballot, Mr Kotagiri said it was difficult choosing the right block of land.

"Our choice was mainly based on the lake views and valley views," he said.

It will be some time, however, before the family is able to build on their newly-purchased block, with construction set to begin at the earliest from December this year.

"It's going to be a long wait," Mr Kotagiri said.
