At 9am, the multiple fire hot-spots were not yet fully contained but the Emergency Services were confident that the 10 crews involved had made substantial progress. Containment lines were in place but crews were working to make sure embers didn't jump them.

According to a statement from the ACT Emergency Services Agency, fire fighters had mopped up hot spots identified by on-the-ground patrols, helicopter surveillance and thermal imaging equipment in aircraft.

Fire breaks had been strengthened and areas cleared of trees and other potential fuel.

"Favourable conditions eased fire behaviour and helped firefighters consolidate containment lines", the statement said.

The advice from the agency was that the 204 hectare fire was still there but not presenting an immediate danger to people and property. It was seven kilometres from the nearest suburb of Kambah.

During Sunday, 13 ACT Rural Fire Service crews continue to bring the fire under control. Two remote area firefighting teams with specialist personnel, expert in fighting fires in remote and rugged terrain, are involved. Seven helicopters, three dozers and an excavator are also active, the agency said.

"The fire danger rating will reach very high today with westerly winds which are expected to ease this evening. The Bureau of Meterology forecasts mild conditions on the fire ground which will assist efforts to contain the fire and strengthen containment lines," it said.

The bureau is forecasting a top of 29 degrees, with northwesterly winds of 20-30km/h. The wind is expected to tend westerly in the early afternoon, then become light in the evening.

On Saturday, Bureau of Meterology forecaster Gabrielle Woodhouse said a front moving through from NSW could prove helpful to firefighters on Monday and Tuesday.

While the front would bring the chance of thunderstorm activity, Canberra was unlikely to see the damaging winds and rain that came through on Friday afternoon.

Showers were expected to develop late on Monday, and Tuesday was expected to be relatively wet with up to 15 millimetres of rain.

People with asthma and those with other breathing and heart conditions are being advised to avoid vigorous effort and stay inside as the westerly winds were expected to blow smoke over the city.

The agency said following road closures remained until advised otherwise: Paddys River Road from the Cotter Road picnic area (near Brindabella Road), Tidbinbilla Road at Corin Dam Road, and Kambah Pool Road, from Kambah Pool to Mount Vernon Drive.

Emergency Services Agency incident controller Rohan Scott said firefighters had been experiencing milder weather conditions on the fireground than in Canberra on Saturday.

"The weather conditions we’re experiencing in town, we’re not actually getting out at the fireground, which has been fantastic for us," Mr Scott said.

"Temperatures have been lower, the relative humidity has been slightly higher and the winds we’ve been experiencing in town haven’t been as strong on the fireground.

"It’s in a bit of a valley there, protected by a lot of the winds."

"I’m not confident to say it’s under control, having said that we have got containment lines around the majority of the fire."
