Canberra - and the nation - got to know the uber-talented youngster when he made the grand final of Australia's Got Talent in 2016 at the age of just 10.

Now, Callum, who turned 13 in April,  last year spent six months filming for the doco, Making Child Prodigies, which follows the stories of exceptionally gifted children over six episodes.

The stories are interweaved, but Callum's will feature heavily in the second episode on June 5, including following the filming of a video for his debut single, Injustice for All.

Callum, who is a member of MENSA and has an IQ in the top 1.2 per cent of the population, is a whiz at not only guitar, but maths as well.

He is in year nine at school - two years ahead of his age - and about to start year 11 maths. Callum said his first word - bird - at four months and had read all the Harry Potter books himself by year one.

His parents, Doug McPhie and Melissa Freeman, also featured in the series, talking about the joys and challenges of raising a gifted child.

"I suppose we did it to support Callum and it's not something we would seek out on our own, necessarily,'' Doug said.

"It was emotional. I shed a few tears. I'm very proud of Callum's achievements but there are also some unique challenges in parenting a child with his gifts and it hasn't always been an easy road.''

Among the obstacles they faced was finding a school that would embrace Callum's talents. They are happy now with his education but found difficulties at his primary school.

The debut single, Injustice for All, which Callum wrote and recorded when he was 12, is a million-miles-an-hour metal guitar extravaganza, with the video set in an oppressive school.

"It's loosely based on the experiences I had at my old school and how they were then and look at where I am now,'' Callum said.

"It was to show other kids that if they have been bullied or discriminated against or had any other issue in the school system, you can rise above it.''

The video was filmed in Queensland where Callum's godfather has a video production company. Doug's cousin also runs an entertainment agency and secured some cheerleaders from the Gold Coast Titans to also appear in the clip. It was filmed in a railway workshop on a humid Ipswich day.

"I was wearing heavy boots and leather pants so it was pretty hot,'' Callum said.

"It was good fun though.''

Callum had his own unique take on being labelled a child prodigy.

"Well, it feels good but I'm not surprised,'' he said.

Doug said while Callum appearing on reality TV was all about competition, the documentary had really made them contemplate the journey their son had been on and for the family to show a "vulnerable side''.

"Callum is a unique individual of many ages at once but most of all, he is still our child,'' Doug said.

"Being the parent of a gifted child means a lot of the time you have to go out of your comfort zone.''
