It turns out giving them some colourful boxes covered in their favourite perfume and filled with toys and meat treats will do the trick.
Brothers Sabi and Marjan received the VIP treatment last week as Jamala Wildlife Lodge marked the lions' 16th birthdays just two years after their mum Millie, who shares the same enclosure.
And the treats are still flowing, with the boys feasting on chicken drumsticks when The Canberra Times visited on Tuesday.
"We just try to give them extra treats, and we put extra effort into wrapping and painting the boxes for them so that it's something out of the ordinary," senior keeper Katie Ness said.
"These boys particularly like eucalyptus leaves and rolling around in them, and different perfumes and smells is something they really respond to, even though the ones they like are usually the ones no one wants to wear."
The lions, who were born in Canberra, have arguably become Jamala Wildlife Lodge's star attraction thanks to their antics outside the $2175-a-night jungle bungalow that overlooks their enclosure.
The big cats are separated from guests only by a glass wall, and Sabi and Marjan are keen to let visitors know whose territory they've stepped into.
"The boys like to spray their urine on the glass," Ms Ness laughed.
"What's been really interesting, with people having the opportunity to spend the night with them, is that we've found out now that they wake the guests up at 2 or 3 o'clock every morning.
"The boys will push their faces right up into the corner and roar because it amplifies it back into their face and they feel really big and strong, but you don't get any sleep in that room."
