Seeing Machines, which is listed on the London Stock Exchange but based in Canberra, develops systems that track the eye movement of equipment operators to identify and prevent fatigue, with applications in the mining, automotive and now aviation sectors.

The L3 Technologies full flight simulator, which will be operational from June 2019, will include Seeing Machines' technology to monitor the eye movement, attention and sight direction of pilots training to fly the new Boeing 787.

An announcement from the airline is expected in about six months.

The system would help experienced pilots transition more easily to the new plane, which includes a head-up display, Seeing Machines General Manager of Aviation Patrick Nolan said.

The technology could also be used to monitor air traffic controllers, he said.

The technology used an infrared camera to image a driver's or pilot's face, tracking each eye's movement, blinking, mouth movement and face direction.

That data was collected and processed to provide real-time information about the state of the driver.

The system mapped what a person looked at while driving in real time, the head of advanced engineering at Seeing Machines, John Noble, said.

The company was a tier two company that provided specialised technology to tier one original equipment manufacturers, Mr Noble said.

The core tracking capabilities, combined with an understanding of human behaviour and the vehicle environment, were used to determine a driver's mental state, he said.

"In an aviation environment, that support might be in a training environment where pilots can review their behaviour in relation to specific in-flight scenarios. In a passenger car, it could mean automated braking assistance, or ensuring you're ready before making the transition from automated to manual driving," Mr Noble said.

Mr Nolan said the technology would help pilots of all experience levels train and adapt to new aircraft.

Trainee pilots could also benefit from eye-tracking technology within a year, he said.

"We’re in conversation now with a couple of the original equipment manufacturers who now run pilot training schools," he said. "We could certainly have the capability in a flight training aircraft."

Seeing Machines, which was founded in 1997 within the Australian National University, is also supplying its eye-tracking technology to the Royal Australian Airforce's training initiatives.

"What [the airforce] really wanted to do was to understand and train more effectively from the very start," Mr Nolan said.

The technology would potentially fast-track trainee pilots into different specialised areas or aircraft by providing real-time assessment of their attention and focus abilities.

"In the military, there’s fast jets, there’s also transport aircraft a range of different platforms that these guys and girls will end up flying," he said.

In future, Mr Noble said there were "exciting opportunities" for the technology to help air traffic controllers when air traffic increased, monitoring the controllers' attention spans and fatigue patterns.

"There's going to be a lot more planes and they're going to be flying closer together and I think putting our technology into the consoles for the people that are going to operating, managing and controlling the airspace is as important as what we can do in the aircraft or the simulator," he said.

"We’re looking to support and optimise and really understand the changing workloads of an air traffic controller."

Mr Nolan said Seeing Machines was fortunate to be working in Canberra and the location helped the company to work with Defence.

"Being able to leverage the capability from Canberra and bring it to the world has worked very well," he said.
