Skateboards are being replaced by their two-wheeled cousins and Canberra got in on the action on Saturday with the ACT Regional Titles hosted at the Woden skate park.

Scooter riding is rapidly growing across the globe and is in the process of being recognised as an official sport in Australia.

Australasian Scooter Association president Brett Waesch said other states had developed a dedicated scooter community and he hoped an ACT-specific committee could be created to grow the sport in the territory.

"Canberra's got some of the best outdoor parks in Australia," Mr Waesch said.

"It's the fastest-growing roller-sport, it's a lot more accessible for young kids."

Competitors, aged from seven years old to adult, threw themselves around the Woden bowls trying to impress three judges with their routines.

They each got two 45-second runs, with their highest score counting. Mr Waesch said they were judged on consistency, style, diversity, use of the park and difficulty.

Childhood friends Saxon van der Weegen and James Dempster, both 20, started riding scooters when they were aged about 11, and now ride representing Fyshwick's Straight Line outdoor adventure store.

They grew up riding at Canberra's skate parks and Mr Dempster said there had been a noticeable shift in attitudes over the years.

"When we grew up, this was a pretty rough area," Mr Dempster said.

"They used to bully the scooter kids, but it's become more accepted.

"Now we're the older ones in the group and we can set the tone."

Mr van der Weegen said the sport had a lot of good role models for up-and-comers to follow on social media, such as Queensland's Ryan Williams who tours the world with the renowned Nitro Circus and brings scooter riding to a massive audience.

Canberra youngster James Burton, 13, was competing at his first tournament on Saturday, and his mother Sharon said after picking up a scooter at age two he'd never put it down.

"Whenever we go anywhere on holiday the first thing we have to find is the skate park," Mrs Burton said.

Father James Burton added: "Everything is packed in the car and scooters go on top for easy access."

The top 10 qualifiers in each age group, and top 12 for professionals, were eligible for the National Championships later this year. The best riders at nationals will then be able to qualify for the World Championships, held this year in Barcelona, Spain.

At this stage the sport is still volunteer-run, Mr Waesch said, and he would like to see it continue to grow more mainstream and in particular attract more female riders.

He said the ultimate goal worldwide was to get the sport considered for Olympic inclusion. Skateboarding will make its first appearance at Tokyo 2020.
