A Bureau of Infrastructure, Transport and Regional Economics report shows ACT households fork out an average of $208 each week on their vehicles, $27 more than the average for Australian capital cities.

The data, which looks at household spending from 2015-16, breaks spending on vehicles down into several categories.

It reveals ACT households have the highest weekly spend on vehicle registration and insurance at $44.05, up nearly $10 compared to the bureau's last report, which looked at 2009-10 spending.

That figure is likely to increase further after last year's ACT budget introduced a raft of tax and fee increases, driving the price of fully registering a vehicle in the territory up by 5 per cent.

The new report also shows Canberrans fork out the most in Australia each week on fuel ($52.79) and other vehicle charges like parking fees and driving lessons ($16.59).

Canberrans spending more on fuel than their interstate counterparts comes as no surprise, with the latest Australian Institute of Petroleum weekly report showing we're still being charged more than drivers in any of the five major capital cities.

The average price of petrol in Canberra is 148.3 cents per litre, with Perth the closest at 146.9 cents per litre and Melbourne getting the cheapest fuel at an average 139.5 cents per litre.

Spending on vehicles accounts for about 12 per cent of Canberrans' weekly output, with only households in Hobart and Brisbane forking out a higher percentage.
