The ACT's troubled health system has enough woes. To add to them, Canberra patients in need of urgent psychiatric care are having to wait months just for an initial appointment.

Critics are growing tired of the "talk and no action".

Australian Salaried Medical Officers' Federation secretary Stephen Crook believes Health Minister Meegan Fitzharris and Mental Health Minister Shane Rattenbury were "hamstrung" by the Barr government and unable to provide more funding.

Labor promised at the last election to build a bikeway for Belconnen and last year said it would fund upgrades to Tuggeranong and Woden. Today, the ACT government is announcing funding in the next budget for these projects aimed at reshaping the town centres.

They're all getting new or upgraded cycle ways, and the money is expected to fund the completion of upgrades linking Belconnen town centre and the University of Canberra, revitalising a disused busway and creating separated cycle ways.

The Australian War Memorial is one of Canberra's most popular and respected institutions. But critics say it risks turning war into a source of entertainment, rather than acting as a place to commemorate conflicts.

Last year's Nobel Peace prize winner, the International Campaign Against Nuclear Weapons, grew out of the Medical Association for the Prevention of War. It has used the federal inquiry into Canberra's national institutions to take aim at the memorial's sponsorship arrangements with weapons manufacturers.

The association's president, Canberra-based retired GP Dr Sue Wareham, has lashed the audio visual elements of the memorial's exhibitions, the lack of peace movement materials on display and the prospect of recent border patrols to stop asylum seekers reaching Australian shores being recognised at the memorial.

Expectant mothers are often told they're "eating for two". But new research from the University of Canberra has de-bunked the common perception that pregnancy is a trigger for long-term weight gain in women.

The findings contradict years of previous study. Researchers sampled more than 8000 Australian women over a 16-year-period, and found the two factors that put women most at risk of weight gain were depression and not having a paid job, regardless of income.

Even the study's lead author was surprised at the findings.

A new stadium with a roof in Civic could host AFL and international cricket as part of an evolving plan to transform the city centre with a sports venue, convention centre and hotel.

It's understood a Canberra businessman is keen to help fast-track the delayed plan to build a stadium in Civic as part of a wider redevelopment of the precinct.

It's believed there is a renewed push to put an integrated precinct back on the radar within the next 10 years.
