Summer's not quite done yet. Here's what's making headlines.

From towering pines to noxious poplars and majestic eucalypts, Canberra’s tree-lined streets and boulevards have plenty of problems that need solving.

The National Capital Authority is developing a new tree management policy to ensure Canberra’s prize treescape is not neglected, as thousands of trees are heading to their natural end.

The authority has put out a call for communications specialists to help develop such a policy, with an emphasis on transparency around how trees are managed, and how and why they are removed and replaced.

When you see those ads asking to sponsor an Australian child through the Smith Family, think about young Canberra law student Pavana Suwanmuk.

The 21 year old was a child sponsored throughout her schooling years by the Smith Family, her family struggling financially but overcoming the odds and succeeding with the help of the Learning for Life program.

Pavana spoke at an afternoon tea at Government House to potential donors who might contribute to the Smith Family's program, which is dedicated to ensuring children from disadvantaged backgrounds were supported and encouraged at school.

The ACT government does not have the resources to properly police building quality in the midst of Canberra's construction boom, a peak housing body says.

The Housing Industry Association has called for a "serious investment" in Access Canberra's building regulation branch, arguing a lack of staff has left it incapable of monitoring compliance across the city's growing number of construction sites.

But Access Canberra head Dave Peffer said expanding the branch's 14-member team wouldn't itself fix the problem, as he suggested prospective buyers held one of the keys to lifting building standards in the ACT.

With the number of injured wildlife on the rise, ACT Wildlife has opened a centre where the public can take injured animals to be looked after.

ACT Wildlife attributes the rise in numbers of injured animals to a hotter climate and Canberra's building boom.

The organisation's vice president, Martin Lind, said Canberrans were also becoming more aware of its services as its volunteer base expanded.
