It has been a tumultuous 24 hours in Australian politics, with former foreign minister Julie Bishop announcing she'll retire from parliament just months out from the next federal election, and Australian ambassador to the US Joe Hockey in hot water over his professional relationships. Member for Canberra Gai Brodtmann, having called a close on her political career, is going out swinging against the "Canberra bubble". Our top stories today are keeping it local.

The Royal Canberra Show is back again and organisers expect 100,000 to attend over the three days of the event.
The show features some innovations, including about 50 stalls set up by local organisations, "car soccer", and the return of the woodchopping competition.

Survey asks students to 'name names' as violence concerns continue
After The Canberra Times revealed a host of complaints about the handling of violence at Theodore Primary, a survey has been handed out to students asking them whether they had experienced bullying or violence.
But it also asked them to record both their own name and the names of their alleged bullies, sparking privacy concerns among some families.

War Memorial plans to build car park at base of Mount Ainslie
The Australian War Memorial plans to get a hold of land at the base of Mount Ainslie and turn it into 118-space a car park during its $498.7 million expansion.
The land looks to sit inside Remembrance Nature Park behind Treloar Crescent and the War Memorial's director, Brendan Nelson, anticipates the government will have no qualms with handing it over.

Laurie Fisher and Peter Hewat staying put as Brumbies re-sign coaches
Laurie Fisher and Peter Hewat have been locked in as coaches for the ACT Brumbies in a massive show of faith from the Brumbies board.
Fisher has served in several different roles at the Brumbies in his 20 years of service, including head coach and director of rugby.
Hewat moved to Canberra last year to link with McKellar as the backs coach after starting his coaching career in Japan.
