Local Ngunnawal elders named the hospital Yurwang Mura, or strong pathway. The centre will provide specialised care for people recovering from surgery, illness or injury, or experiencing mental illness.

Hospital commissioning executive director Linda Kohlhagen said the new facility would bring services from seven different locations around Canberra under the one roof.

"[It's] to enable all those clinicians to work more collaboratively," Ms Kohlhagen said.

"For example if you had a stroke, you might receive your psychology and speech pathology at Canberra Hospital but you have your physio and [occupational therapy] in the health centres."

A protest over staff outsourcing was expected at the opening but was cancelled on Friday evening after the United Voice union struck a deal with the ACT government.

United Voice ACT branch secretary Lyndal Ryan said the deal was "a really significant win".

ACT Health had planned to outsource all non-clinical roles to a service provider under a draft agreement the union had rubbished at the Fair Work Commission.

The outsourcing will go ahead but under different conditions for the university hospital staff.

"United Voice has also received a commitment from government that they will provide sufficient funds to lift wages of the staff in line with community standards," Ms Ryan said.

She said the government had promised a review of its contract with the service provider.

"We are very pleased that the minister was able to intervene to bring about this positive result, negating any need for us to continue with the protest as planned."

The hospital is expected to take its first patients in July.
