That's almost 2 degrees warmer than Saturday, when - for the second time in a week - Canberra set a new low for the year.

After Wednesday's overnight low of minus 6.3 degrees, at the time the coldest morning of the year, Canberra has outdone itself by dropping to minus 6.5 in the early hours of Saturday.

The low was recorded at 5.03am at the Canberra Airport.

While things are expected to warm up a bit - Sunday's forecast top is 11 degrees, about the same as Saturday - the overnight lows are expected to remain at or below zero for the coming week.

Bureau of Meteorology duty forecaster Jordan Notara confirmed Saturday's chilly start was the coldest temperature recorded in Canberra this year, adding that a high-pressure system over the territory was causing clear skies and widespread frost.

At 9am the temperature was 0 degrees, warming ever so slightly to 1.6 degrees by 9.30am and 2.5 degrees by 10am.

Canberra has battled sub-zero mornings since Monday, making for some stunning scenes around the capital.

While we were in for a top of 12 degrees today, the mercury maxed out at just 10.6 degrees.

At 7.10pm just before the Canberra Raiders took on the North Queensland Cowboys at Canberra stadium, the latest temperature reading was a chilly 2.7 degrees.

The Cowboys sure know how to pick their visits to the capital. When the teams met in Canberra in July last year the temperature was 0.6 degrees when the game began and nearly -2 degrees by full-time.

Mr Notara said a front moving over the territory was expected to bring some rain during the week, most likely late Tuesday or early Wednesday.
