Care packages including Christmas presents and festive food were transported by Tony Innaimo Transport in Fyshwick to country families through the Adopt a Farming Family initiative, started by Canberra woman Maree Peatey.

Maree wanted to help drought-stricken families and was initially fundraising earlier in the year to assist families with fortnightly care packages that included food and basic household items.

The broader idea of Adopt a Farming Family came in early October when Maree wanted to focus on a campaign that could remove the stress of Christmas from these families.

Canberra families could adopt a farming family for Christmas, in areas such as Trangie, Trundle, Fifield, and Albert.

Maree was assisted in the campaign by another Canberra woman, former gold-medal-winning Hockeyroo, Lou Dobson.

They have now helped more than175 families and more 650 individuals with the campaign.

Sixty of the families were from the Coolah region, hit by fires last year and drought this year.

One family who received a package posted their heartfelt thanks on Instagram. They had cried opening the bundle, after a tough year including failed wheat crops.

"You have brought so much joy to our house,'' they wrote.

Maree and Lou also helped a farming family suffering after the death of a parent. The children also had to give up their beloved horses and a Canberra family stepped in to help create some Christmas joy for them.

"This is just one of the many sad and confronting stories we have come across these last few weeks,'' Lou said.

Maree and Lou said the support from the Canberra community had been amazing, including businesses who did not do their Secret Santa this year but instead donated items to the campaign.

"One thing we have identified with the Adopt a Farming Family Campaign is people want to be involved and help make a difference to people in our wider community,'' the said.

"We want to continue making a difference through Canberrans Care and take it to another level in 2019."
