"I'm checking in constantly for news of all sorts: local, global and social," the Woden woman said.

"It keeps me in contact with what's going on around me. I hate being out of the loop.

"You learn an awful lot about the world and whatever passions you have. Twitter is an excellent curating tool for information."

Ms Dodd isn't alone in her addiction to living life in 280 characters or less, with a new study showing Canberrans are the nation's biggest tweeters.

The 2018 Yellow Social Media Report, which surveyed more than 1500 Australians on their online habits found 25 per cent of ACT residents used Twitter, the most of any state or territory.

A quarter of Canberrans used the social media service compared to 23 per cent of NSW residents, 19 per cent of Victorians and 16 per cent of Queenslanders.

On average, Canberrans post on Twitter 35 times per week.

While the ACT may be home to the nation's biggest tweeters, Twitter use is on the decline,  with 31 per cent of Australians reporting they stopped using the site in the past year.

The study also found more Canberrans used LinkedIn compared to other jurisdictions, with 28 per cent logging on, and were also the most frequent users of Snapchat, using the app an average 51 times per week.

The most commonly used social media site in Canberra was Facebook, at 94 per cent, followed by YouTube, LinkedIn, Twitter and Instagram.

Yellow executive general manager James Ciuffetelli said more than 90 per cent of ACT residents owned a smart phone.

"It seems people living in the ACT certainly like to make the best use of online technology and social media, taking advantage of it to improve their careers and their fitness," he said.

"They're the biggest adopters of wearable devices like Apple Watches and Fit Bits at nearly one in three consumers, where the national average is around one in five."

The survey said 63 per cent of Canberrans use the internet five or more times a day, while only 28 per cent of those in the ACT checked social media five or more times in a day, compared to the national average of 34 per cent.

Almost half of those who were surveyed in Canberra said they feel strongly about using social media to support topical issues, while more than 20 per cent said they were worried about something they post coming back to haunt them.

Ms Dodd said she isn't surprised at the fact Canberrans are among the country's most prolific tweeters.

"We're a very connected and educated lot and we like to be active members of the community," she said.

"Politics is big here too and we are close to the action."
