The teenager climbed up the large tree near the Yarralumla Nursery on Saturday afternoon but was unable to climb back down.
Following calls from people on the ground to police, fire and rescue crews were called to the scene just before 4pm.
One firefighter managed to climb halfway up the tree using ropes but was unable to reach the child, an ACT Emergency Services Agency spokesman said.
The teenager was rescued just after 5pm after being pulled to safety by fire and rescue's Bronto truck, the ACT's only aerial ladder appliance, after previous attempts to reach the boy without it failed.
The boy did not sustain injuries during the incident.
