'Critical breach': Citizenship saga creates three problems for Shorten

At the time, tactically, it had all seemed so sensible. Late last year the government was enveloped in chaos. Even the Deputy Prime Minister, Barnaby Joyce, had been forced to stand down, plucked from Parliament because he'd failed to ensure that he wasn't a dual citizen. The coalition wasn’t popular and there was a good chance it might loose a by-election which could, in turn, force it out of office if any of the independents changed their vote to support Labor.
