Qantas confirmed strong winds were affecting flights from its terminal, and advised customers to check their flight status online. It said one return Sydney-Canberra service and one Canberra-Melbourne service had been cancelled on Friday morning, but all passengers were now on their way or at their destination after being accommodated on other flights.

Virgin Australia said the strong winds had reduced the number of flights allowed to arrive and depart each hour from Sydney and Melbourne.

"This is impacting all airlines," Virgin Australia said.

"We're working hard to have guests on their way as quickly and safely as possible."

The airline is asking passengers to check their flight status before heading to the airport.

"We know delays can be frustrating, however, your safety is our number one priority."

Thousands of travellers have been delayed at Sydney Airport as windy conditions forced the airport to alter its operations.

"Due to strong winds, single runway operations are currently in effect," Sydney Airport tweeted.

"International and Domestic terminals are experiencing some flight delays. Please contact your airline for more information."

The Bureau of Meteorology forecasts a windy day with a possible shower in Canberra. It's said to expect northwesterly winds travelling 30 to 35 km/h tending westerly. There's a medium chance of showers with a top of 17 degrees.

A severe weather warning for damaging winds has been issued for the south-eastern parts of the Melbourne and the state stretching through East Gippsland to Orbost. Peak gusts in these areas could reach up to 100km/h with averages of 60 km/h.
