A Transport Canberra and City Services spokesperson said after a recent wet weather event, dampness was identified in some interior walls, including in the staff area and two community rooms. Some furniture was also damaged.

"The rectification works required would disrupt the smooth operations of the library," the spokesperson said.

"Further investigations are also required into the possible presence of asbestos materials due to the age of the building.

"For this reason, the decision was made to close the library to allow the works to safely take place."

The library and its return chutes have been closed since Wednesday, with members and visitors encouraged to instead use the libraries in Civic, Gungahlin or Belconnen.

Alternative arrangements are being made for anyone who has booked a community room at the library.

"We know how popular the Dickson Library is and apologise to customers for the inconvenience that this closure will cause," the spokesperson said.

"Members are also reminded they can use their membership number and PIN to download eBooks, eAudio, digital magazines and music."
