A Transport Canberra and City Services spokesperson said asbestos was only present in bonded sheeting in the library's ceiling, and ongoing works to fix water damage would not disturb that area.

Tests for mould also found that levels were "not above normal", and all public areas had been deemed safe.

After a wet weather event last month, dampness was identified in some interior walls at the library, including in the staff area and two community rooms. Some furniture was also damaged.

From Friday, July 6, and until the library fully reopens, visitors will be able to pick up requests, borrow and return books from a limited collection, use public computers and access newspapers and other resources during normal operating hours. Return chutes will also be operational.

A large section of the library will remain boarded up for about six weeks as work to fix water damage continues.

"The water damage at the library is more substantial than first identified, and this partial closure will allow additional works to be undertaken, including replacement of some of the flooring and improvements to subfloor ventilation," a Transport Canberra and City Services spokesperson said.

"These rectification works can be safely completed while the library is open for partial use."
