The crackdown follows the release of the National Wastewater Drug Monitoring Program report which found that Australia ranked second for methamphetamine use out of 23 countries. The ACT had the second highest heroin and cocaine proportionate of the population.

Just last week, three Canberrans died from heroin overdoses.

ACT Police Minister Mick Gentleman said he was concerned at the ACT's high illicit drug use.

“We have real concerns about the amount of criminal drug activity and the amount of drug use across the ACT. So we’ve put big investments in both government and policing to combat criminal drug activity across the ACT,” he said.

ACT Crime Stoppers chairwoman Diana Forrester said things to look out for were drawn curtains, people coming and going frequently, and “unusual amounts of pool chemicals in the trash that actually you know that the neighbour hasn't got a pool”.

Previous dob in a dealer campaigns had been successful, she said.

“We have had an increase in the numbers of reporting when we ran the campaign in the past,” she said. “In fact in the ACT we had an upsurge of more than 40 per cent of drug-related reports.”

Deputy chief police officer commander Mark Walters said drug supply was a result of demand, and police were working to reduce demand, but overall Australians must come together to tackle illicit drug use and activities.

“The issue of illicit drug abuse, production and trafficking in illicit drugs is a very very complex problem and it's not owned by any one organisation or any one agency,” he said.
