Canberrans could have been forgiven for thinking we are rapidly heading into winter and not summer after the weather the capital has experienced this week.

However despite the cool temperatures and rainfall, Canberra is still on track to experience a hotter and drier than usual summer.
The mercury will peak at 18 degrees on Sunday with a 60 per cent chance of rainfall throughout the day. Although if it does rain we're only expected to receive one to three millimetres.
The drizzling rain held off long enough on Saturday for people to get out and enjoy the Blundell's Cottage gala day. It served as the unveiling for recent conservation works done at the cottage and offered lots of fun family activities.
Looking to the week ahead and temperatures are expected to rise with 22 degrees predicted for Monday before 23 degrees on both Tuesday and Wednesday.
However don't expect to get outside to enjoy the warmer weather. The chance of showers is increasing as the week progresses until Wednesday when an 80 per cent chance could bring as much as 10 millimetres of rain.
However the rain isn't expected to hang around for too long, according to the Bureau of Meteorology climate outlook.
The average maximum temperature for Canberra in October is 19 degrees, and while temperatures on Wednesday through Friday were noticeably lower, the return to the low to mid 20s in the coming days continues a trend of higher than average temperatures observed across Australia this year.
Bureau forecaster Katarina Kovacevic said a series of rain-bearing fronts moving through the south-eastern part of Australia were responsible for the cooler temperatures in Canberra during the week.
"While some rain might bring short-term relief, conditions remain very dry," Ms Kovacevic said.
"The climate outlook suggests the conditions in November will be dry and just because it's raining now doesn't mean it won't dry out in the coming months."
The bureau expects the trend of higher than average maximum temperatures to continue through the summer and into 2019, the chances temperatures will be higher than average is 80 per cent across the whole mainland.
Ms Kovacevic said the 30 per cent chance rainfall in November would exceed median levels for the month meaning the odds are definitely in favour for a drier than average November.
NSW Rural Fire Service Lake George Zone membership services officer Darren Marks took the opportunity to remind the community to prepare for a potentially dangerous upcoming fire season despite the recent weather.
"The rain is welcome, but it's no excuse to get complacent," Mr Marks said.
"We might be looking a little better now, but down the track there is still potential for a dangerous fire season."
