Mike Hall, a celebrated British cyclist, was competing in the inaugural Indian Pacific Wheel Race, an unsupported, solo ride covering nearly 5500 kilometres from Fremantle to Sydney, that crosses the Nullarbor Plain then passes through Adelaide and Melbourne.

He died on March 31, 2017, after being hit by a car south of Canberra, at the intersection of the Monaro Highway and Williamsdale Road.

No charges have been laid against the driver, then-19-year-old Shegu Bobb.

He was excused from giving evidence at the coronial inquest after being described as "suggestible" in police interviews about the incident.

Coroner Bernadette Boss noted English was a second language for Mr Bobb, who was born in Sierra Leone and moved to Australia in 2005.

Dr Boss said he was a very vulnerable person who would add little to proceedings.

"The quality of his evidence would be very poor," she said.

Mr Hall's former partner Anna Haslock, who travelled from England to attend the inquest into his death in Canberra this week, said she didn’t feel satisfied with the process.

“The only thing I can say to anybody now is that I came to the inquest to find out what happened and that's all I wanted to do,” she said.

The inquest, at the ACT Magistrates Court, heard that Hall had been wearing dark clothing and would have been difficult to see in the early hours of the morning on the unlit rural road.

Two drivers, including a police officer, gave evidence that they had nearly missed him on the road shortly before the collision.

But two other drivers testified that they had seen Mr Hall’s lights and reflective stripes on his clothing.

Ms Haslock said Mr Hall had been very aware of the dangers of his chosen sport, and would have taken measures to ensure his own safety.

“He was one of the most knowledgeable, skilled and experienced guys at doing this stuff, so although I worried about him, I knew that he knew what he was doing,” she said.

“And I would say a lot of partners of people who have maybe extreme sport passions, although it is worrying to be at home and you're watching the dot and things, you know they're doing something they love, and you trust them to look after themselves. I believe Mike was looking after himself. I think that's really important.”

Mr Bobb had told police he had been momentarily distracted by a truck parked at an unusual spot on the road, and hadn’t seen Mr Hall until it was too late.

The police concluded that Mr Bobb was driving within the road’s 100km speed limit.

Ms Haslock said she wanted Mr Hall’s death to add to the growing call for safer roads.

“Roads are shared spaces,” she said.

"It's a driver's responsibility, it's our responsibility as drivers to be aware of anything that might be in our path, whether it's slow moving or fast moving, and to drive according.

"You have to drive according to the road conditions, and I would suggest that because of so many accidents, a lot of us are not.”

The coroner's findings are expected to be released early next year.
