Gallery of Small Things in Watson has 3 CUBED as first exhibition

Artist Anne Masters says that in her Gallery of Small Things "everything has to be under A3."

That's not surprising, since the Watson space, which she opened on September 27, is only about two metres wide and three metres long. But size isn't everything: the response to the new gallery - billed as Canberra's smallest - has been really positive, she says.

The opening show, 3 CUBED, is a showcase of work in her field, ceramics, based around a conceptual idea around the number three. Inviting nine artists - three teachers, Greg Daly, Janet DeBoos and Joanne Searle; three mentors, Hsin-Yi Yang, Fran Romano and Vicki Grima, and three international artists, Amanda Small, Anna Calluori Holcombe and Ben Carter - it's on show for 33 days.

"GOST has a program where for one month of the year there is a group show focusing on a discipline. This year it is ceramics," she says.

She will have one month a year off. But for the other 10 months, her aim is to exhibit works by a stable of emerging and established artists to provide mentoring and educational opportunities as well as a showcase for artworks. These exhibitions will begin on November 2, showcasing a range of works from textiles to ceramics to photography to paintings.

"GOST promotes emerging artists and graduates from art and design studies, providing them with an excellent stepping-stone to showcase works alongside that of established artists in an intimate and supportive space," Masters, who works at the ACT School of Art and Design as an adviser to PhD students, says.

"The works will rotate when artists wish to change their artworks."

3 CUBED is on at the Gallery of Small Things until October 29. Current hours are Monday to Friday 11am to 6pm, Saturday and Sunday 11am to 4pm. galleryofsmallthings.com.
