Jimmy Rix's sculpture, titled Stopping to Smell the Flowers, was unveiled at a "housewarming picnic" in Throsby on Sunday.

The artwork now stands on Bettong Avenue, in a park named Joey Park in recognition of its new attraction.

The ACT government commissioned the piece for $37,000 last year.

Mr Rix said the work was inspired by the kangaroos that nibbled on his plants at night.

"The next day, I would find them eaten," he said.

"[The artwork] is the kangaroos enjoying the flowers as I would enjoy the flowers during the day."

Mr Rix has been a sculptor for 23 years and has pieces in collections across Australia, but did not previously have any works permanently installed in Canberra.

Minister for Arts and Cultural Events Gordon Ramsay said the sculpture's new location in the Gungahlin region was fitting given its proximity to Mulligans Flat and Goorooyarroo Nature Reserve, which were home to many kangaroos.

"Public art plays such an important part in Canberra and cultural life," Mr Ramsay said.

"People can stop and engage and think about what it means.

"This piece of public art speaks of relationships, of hope, of love, of reconciliation and so much more."
