Hundreds of miniature-tree enthusiasts gathered on Saturday at the show's new location at Canberra High School.

In addition to the trees on display, which highlighted some of the most exquisite examples of bonsai art in the region, the show offered a series of demonstrations, and plants and equipment for sale.

The show continues on Sunday, with demonstrations at 10am and 1pm on bonsai basics for novices interested in starting their bonsai adventure. At 11am and 2pm other aspects of bonsai growing will be covered in greater detail.

Longtime bonsai enthusiast and former president of the Canberra Bonsai Society Ruth McLucas said the great thing about growing bonsai was not only did it offer engagement with plants but also with people.

"You can really get a lot of pleasure in creating something and seeing it flourish," Ms McLucas said.

"And it doesn't have to take forever. You can see good results in a short span of time as long as you start with good materials."

Ms McLucas said there were plenty of people on hand at the show to explain what bonsai growing was all about and what it required to be successful.

"It is an art form and it is in the eye of the beholder," she said.

The show features bonsai from artists included in the collection at the National Bonsai and Penjing Collection at the arboretum. It has examples of Australian natives and more exotic offerings.

Canberra Bonsai Society president Tony Gill said his love for gardening grew into a passion for bonsai because he found it therapeutic.

"It's a hobby that was able to balance that busy work life," Mr Gill said.

The Canberra Bonsai Society annual show continues on Sunday from 9am to 4pm at Canberra High School.

Entry is $5 for adults, $3 for concession card holders, children under 12 free.
