Melba resident Bek Bjarnadottir's two jack russell terrier crosses, Rocko and Duffman, were found dead on Tuesday night in similar circumstances.

She said she was devastated by the incident. Vet staff told her the dogs were likely killed due to baiting.

"I went out to feed my dogs, but I couldn't find Rocko. I looked around the yard and noticed a lot of orange vomit everywhere," Ms Bjarnadottir said. "I searched for him and he eventually crawled out of the dog door, came over to me and collapsed on my lap. I took him inside and gave him some water, his breathing became really laboured, and then he vomited, started convulsing and died.

"The next morning, my son got up and then found Duffman lifeless in the kitchen, the floor was covered in the same vomit."

The Melba resident said before he was put to bed, Duffman was showing no signs of illness Rocko had shown the previous night.

A spokesman for ACT Policing said officers were called to the Melba home on Wednesday afternoon and investigations into the incident were ongoing.

A police spokesman said dog baiting was an offence that "seems to surface periodically" in Canberra.

Forensic testing was carried out to determine if the death of the two dogs was due to poisoning.

Ms Bjarndottir said the pets were part of the family.

"I've just been concentrating on consoling my son and trying to rebuild my faith in humanity," she said.

"Lots of people haven reached out to offer their condolences."

An RSPCA ACT spokeswoman said it had received multiple reports of suspected animal baiting over the past year, involving pets and other wildlife.

"We can confirm that four of those reports showed signs of some type of baiting," the spokeswoman said.

"RSPCA ACT is working with members of the public and local law enforcement to investigate reports and will continue to work to protect animals in our community."

Charges of recklessly poisoning a domestic or native animal can bring fines of more than $5000 or jail time of up to one year.

Further afield, dogs were targeted by posioned-laced meatballs in a prominent Sydney park this week.

The RSPCA spokeswoman said the organisation was concerned by the string of baiting incidents across Canberra in recent months.

"We ask the Canberra community to be vigilant around their animals and observant of any foreign substances or objects in their yards or common walking routes," she said.

"We're a pet-loving city, it's heartbreaking to see the death of any animal, especially when it's such a painful and unnecessary death."

Pet owners are reminded to be aware of substances around the home, and if baiting pests to do so that's difficult for pets or native wildlife to access.
