To the uninitiated, Hot Dub Wine Machine might sound like the latest in vineyard technology. In fact, it's a music event curated by DJ Tom Lowndes, who performs under the name Tom Loud. He's taking it, for the third time, to a series of vineyards with various artists playing electronic and dance music to create an outdoor party atmosphere. Lake George Winery is one of those vineyards, offering food and drink as well as music - and, for many, dancing.

This is the second year Hot Dub Wine Machine has come to an ACT vineyard and Lowndes enjoys the outdoor setting and atmosphere.

He says he is a traditional, live DJ who plays one verse and one chorus of each of the classic songs he uses in his set.

"I don't play any mashes or remixes."

Any tinkering with the sound is done with his turntable, which is connected to an MP3.

HDWM is an offshoot of Lowndes' Hot Dub Time Machine, a DJ show he started at the Sydney Fringe Festival in 2011. HDTM is a two-and-a-half hour musical journey from 1954, with Bill Haley and the Comets' Rock Around the Clock, to 2019 and Lorde by way of The Beatles, the Rolling Stones, Led Zeppelin, Madonna, Nirvana and many more.

His set in Wine Machine is, of necessity, a heavily condensed version since there are other acts performing.

The Presets, "one of my idols", are bringing their large-scale show to the Wine Machine stages. The electronic music duo of Julian Hamilton and Kim Moye have been together since 2003. Their 2008 album Apocalypto won six awards at the ARIAs including album of the year and in 2009 they won another ARIA award for best dance release for Talk Like That

Songwriter and performer Hayden James will be there with his "baby-making house" and electro-pop band Confidence Man - "their music is just a breath of fresh air, it's so fun and so fly" is also performing, as is GRAACE off the back of her triple j hit Last Night and debut EP, Self Sabotage. Rounding out the lineup are Kinder, the electronic-music sister act of Briony and Savannah Kinder, disco-house duo Happiness is Wealth and host Alex “Rat-Rog” Dyson.

Lowndes, 40, was born in Perth and says he was "a very geeky, very nerdy kid".

He says his love of music came from his father and "listening to our records on repeat".

"He did think there was no good music after 1969."

Still, the older Lowndes passed down his enthusiasm to his son, who came to love such acts as the Rolling Stones and The Beatles.

"I was able to tell you if it was John or Paul singing on a Beatles track by the age of five."

His musical tastes would broaden over time. Lowndes learned piano, drums and guitar but says he "lacked the discipline to get really good".

After scraping through an Arts degree he wanted to work in radio but ended up employed for 10 years as a TV sound designer in Sydney. He worked on shows such as McLeod's Daughters and Underbelly ("I put the gunshots in.").

He had also been DJing as a hobby at raves from his late teens and in 2012 decided to get serious about it and commit himself to Hot Dub Time Machine.

He was successful and has travelled around Australia and internationally - including Britain and the US - with the show. And now the smaller-scale HDWM brings a different, but related, experience for music lovers.
