The teams are currently - on-air at least - renovating the couple's 150-year-old homestead at Candelo, south-west of Bega, meaning a lot of the furniture and appliances came from the big smoke in Canberra.

Mandy and Toad, a third-generation dairy farmer on the lush property, spoke to us on Wednesday but were sworn to secrecy about Sunday night's big reveal of their renovated home.

But Mandy, 28, said the teams really didn't need to do much to impress them.

"It wouldn't have mattered what they did to our house or what furniture they chose, we needed new walls, a new roof and new doors that shut, and we got them," she said.

Salt-of-the-earth Toad also had modest expectations, just hoping for a house that had a fire "trickling along rather than burning a ute-load of wood a week".

"No rats" and "no holes for snakes to get into" would also be bonuses.

"We had a snake get in through the front door once and was in our bedroom for a week," Mandy said.

The couple, who have 20-month-old twins Lenny and Layla, have been viewer favourites, keeping a smile on their face, showing a down-to-earth attitude and keeping clear of the drama.

"We didn't have the time," Mandy said, with a laugh. "We had too much to do."

And the diplomatic couple wouldn't be drawn on the villains of this series, Leigh and Kristie.

"We played our game and they played their game. We didn't get caught up in it all," Toad said.

"Everyone was under the pump and some people handled the pressure differently to others."

Mandy, who is originally from Eden, met Toad through mutual friends. The couple decided to enter House Rules not thinking "in a million years" they'd be accepted.

"They obviously liked something, whether it was the house or us as characters, or whatever. So it was me who actually applied with Toad saying 'yes' to it but I think I thought it just wouldn't pass," Mandy said.

The couple have shown a natural talent for design. Mandy, especially, showed flair doing a kids' mural for David and Chiara's house last week.

"I guess I did art all through school, sewing, textiles designs, woodwork, metalwork - all the crafty stuff, I just did it.

"I sewed with my nan and became crafty. I'm not an artist, I haven't sold anything. It's just at home, definitely before kids, I'd just sit down and start painting a picture. I just like making things, out of fabric, picture frames, whatever comes to mind, I could just do it."

The couple say living in a small community means everyone has treated them pretty much the same as before they went on the show. Almost.

"I played a game of footy on the weekend and had to sign a few autographs for a few kids so that was pretty cool," Toad, 32, said.

And as for Sunday's big unveiling of their resurrected house, Toad, a St George fan, said his heart was with the rugby league. "I'll be watching the State of Origin," he said.

That doesn't mean they're not grateful.

"We're so blessed and thankful we got on the show," Toad said.
