Prince Louis Arthur Charles was born on April 23 to parents William and Kate, the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge.

While the name is set to surge in popularity, there have only been 166 babies born in the ACT named Louis since records began.

But parents of the very few existing Louis are thankful that people will now be able to pronounce the name correctly.

Alex Lamb's son Louis was born a year and two months before the birth of the royal baby.

Ms Lamb speaks French at home, and wanted a French name for their child.

"I feel like now everybody is going to call their babies Louis, so it won't be as unique, but that's alright, it's still a beautiful name," Ms Lamb said.

"One thing is that I guess people will now pronounce it Louis instead of Lewis."

Ms Lamb said before her son was born, she and husband Tom were keen to sit on a beach and think up names for their baby. But her mother actually beat them to the punch when she suggested the name Louis.

"I mentioned it to Tom and he was like, 'yep, that's it'," she said.

The name Louis isn't all that popular in the ACT, at the minute.

In 2018, just two babies have been named Louis, both before the birth of the royal baby. Since record keeping began in Canberra, just 166 boys have been named Louis.

The year of 1990 was the first time more than one boy was named Louis - in fact that year there were five.

The most popular year for the name was in 2013 when there were 17 Louis, followed by 15 in 2014.

Access Canberra licensing and registration division director Derise Cubin said in the ACT, traditional names still dominated the "most popular" list, with three of the top four boys names linked to British monarchy.

"While two boys have been named Louis already in 2018 it will be interesting to see if the popularity of this name takes off throughout the rest of the year," she said.

If Prince Louis' siblings names are anything to go by, it's likely the name will become much more popular before the year is out.

The name George became popular after the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge's first child, born in 2013.

Charlotte, the second child for the pair, topped the list of girls' names in Canberra last year.
